Staff from our Ruddington chemist’s are finally getting to do their big walk in aid of a leading cancer charity this weekend – exactly a year later than they’d originally planned it.
After it was postponed in 2021, due to continuing COVID-19 concerns, five employees from Evans Pharmacy on Charles Street are taking part in the ‘Peak District Mighty Hike 2022’ this Sunday, July 24th*. It’s a 13 mile trek starting at Darley Moor and concluding at the Biggin Village Playing Fields. They’ll be taking in some beautiful Derbyshire scenery along the way whilst raising cash for Macmillan Cancer Support – a charity which aims to help everyone with cancer live life as fully as they can by providing physical, financial and emotional support.
Self-prescribing ‘fresh air and exercise’, Wendy Purdy, Diana Bradshaw, Emma Bassford and Byron Gillespie (pictured top) along with Matt Smith from our Ruddington branch are calling themselves collectively ‘Wendy’s Walkers’. Training for the big day has included local walks of between six to eight miles plus some hill walking further afield, too.
Each participant pledged to raise £250 for the charity, and Wendy herself has already smashed that target – with £450 donated online so far – alongside further cash donations by generous customers made via their collection bucket in the Ruddington pharmacy.
Wendy explains: “Each of us individually have had family members and/or friends who have been affected by cancer. Also it is an illness that affects a great many number of our customers.”
Emma adds: “I have very personal reasons for doing this walk. I have the ‘braca’ gene on my dad’s side of the family that has affected a huge part of the female side. I also have many friends that have lost parents at a young age. Working in this environment means we see many people affected by this disease and the effects on the people who are left behind or have to care for loved ones.”
If you’d like to support Ruddington’s famous five on their ‘Peak District Mighty Hike’ – either before or after the event – donations can continue to be made directly to the Ruddington branch of Evans Pharmacy or via Wendy’s Just Giving page >>HERE<< or her Run Page >>HERE<<.
*UPDATE: SUN 24th JULY:
We’re pleased to report our famous five completed their hike successfully today – even though it ended up being an extra two miles, due to a slight change of route on the day!
Posting the happy news, along with photos on her Facebook page, Wendy reveals: “We did it guys. 15 miles with some hard terrain and very wet weather. But what an achievement 🥳🥳🥳🥳. Soooooo proud of us all!”
Once we discover the total raised by the Ruddington pharmacy team we’ll add it here. Well done to everyone!
